Magazine’s ‘Cities of the Future’ list draws on data from 405 cities in North and South America

EDMONTON - For quality of life, Edmonton is in good company across North and South America, ranking ninth among major cities in a survey published Tuesday by fDi magazine.

The Cities of the Future shortlist is based on independent data collected from 405 cities in North and South America and placed in a number of categories — economic potential, cost effectiveness, human resources, quality of life, infrastructure, business friendliness and promotion strategy.

Major Canadian cities did well in the quality of life category for major cities, which weighed attributes such as life expectancy, hospital beds, education levels, unemployment rates, household income and crime rates.

While Washington, D.C., topped the category, Calgary, Vancouver and Ottawa placed third to fifth, and Toronto placed eighth.

Smaller Canadian cities alsoappear in various categories. Red Deer, for example, placed eighth in quality of life for micro cities.

When all the categories were scored, the overall winner was New York, followed by Chicago, Houston, Toronto, Atlanta and Montreal. Neither Canadian city appeared in the previous top 10 list.

Santiago, Chile, was named the top Latin American City of the Future.
